The Apple Vision Pro is an exciting development in the augmented reality (AR) space. The user puts on the headpiece, which looks much like futuristic goggles, and can then see both the real world around them and a digital overlay. As well as AR, the Vision Pro can be used for full virtual reality (VR), where all that the user sees is computer generated.
While VR and AR have been explored extensively in the gaming world, use in the workplace could be set to grow. The uses of this technology are limited primarily by imagination.
For example, it could be used by engineers and architects to gain a greater understanding of how a potential build will function. The ability to have 3D models appear to be on a table in front of you, being able to walk around and interact with it allows for a greater understanding than 2D drawings or images allow. The virtual structure can be inspected and manipulated to view areas in greater detail. 3D models can be useful to a wide range of industries. All kinds of manufacturers could use it to view product designs in a real-world setting.
Virtual workspaces can also be created. Users can view screens and complete work with the Vision Pro. Meetings could be held virtually, with team members seemingly in the room together when in reality they are spread across the world.
Healthcare is another industry that could benefit greatly from the adoption of AR and VR. Training can be conducted, with users able to interact with virtual bodies and work through scenarios. Complicated or unusual surgeries can be planned, modelling different approaches and potential outcomes.
All new technology has its sceptics, but they are often proved wrong. Robert Metcalfe, who invented Ethernet famously predicted in 1995 that the internet would collapse in 1996, and he literally ate his words at the International World Wide Web Conference in 1997 by blending a copy of his column with water.
This technology is still in its infancy and the uses of it have not yet been fully realised. Industries across the board are looking into how it can be used to improve their services or workflow. By combining it with artificial intelligence, such as computer vision, even more avenues are opened.
You may already have an idea of how your business could use Apple’s Vision Pro, or maybe you have more exploration to undertake. Either way, if you are interested in how your business’ processes can be improved, we’re here to talk through potential digital solutions with you.
